Adoption and Profitability of Breeding Technologies on United States Dairy Farms AgEcon
Khanal, Aditya R.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Adoption decisions and profitability of advanced breeding technologies are analyzed for U.S. dairy farms. The bivariate probit with selection model is used. Results show that specialized, younger, more educated farmers with longer planning horizons are more likely to adopt the technologies, with positive impacts on profitability and negative influences on cost of production.

Effect of follicular wave synchronization on superovulatory response of Girolando embryo donors R. Bras. Zootec.
Ferreira,Joaquim Esquerdo; Mello,Marco Roberto Bourg de; Alves,Pedro Afonso de Preaulx Moreira; Mello,Raquel Rodrigues Costa; Palhano,Helcimar Barbosa.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the follicular wave synchronization method on the superovulatory response of Girolando embryo donors. Seven cows and five heifers were divided into three treatments according to the method of the follicular wave synchronization prior to superovulation. The donors were superovulated with eight FSH decreasing doses, adding 133 mg per animal. The superovulatory response was evaluated using an ultrasound device to quantify the number of corpora lutea. The number and quality of recovered structures were also evaluated. Animal category (cow or heifer) and genetic group influenced the superovulatory response, in which heifers showed a greater response (100% in all treatments) compared with cows, which...

Embryo transfer in no cycling Crioula and Quarter horse breeds treated with estradiol cipionate and long-acting progesterone BABT
Kaercher,Fernanda; Siqueira,Marlon; Mercadante,Alessandro; Figueiredo,Tatiana; Weiss,Romildo Romualdo; Siqueira,Felipe; Kozicki,Luiz Ernandes.
The aim of this work was to prepare the mares for embryo transfer. In group 1 (G1,treated, n=15), recipient mares in anoestrus or in a transition period were treated with 5.0, 3.0 and 2.0 mg of estradiol cipionate at the days 0, 1 and 2 respectively, beginning at the day of ovulation (DO). From the fourth day on, the mares this group received long-acting progesterone weekly, up to the 120 day of gestation. At D8, the embryo was collected from the donor and transferred to the recipient. At D12, the ultrasonographyc diagnosis of pregnancy was carried out. The control group (G2, not treated, n=20) was formed by cycling recipient mares, displaying ovulation at each 2 to 3 days after the donors mare ovulation. The pregnancy rate was higher (p<0.05) in the...

Expression of Amphiregulin During the Pre- and Post-implantation Period in the Mouse Reproductive Tract OAK
LEE, Dong-Soo; YANAGIMOTO UETA, Yoshiko; SUZUKI, Hiroshi; 鈴木, 宏志.
In mammals, embryo implantation is an essential step in reproduction. Implantation is a phenomenon that involves crosstalk between the blastocyst and the maternal endometrium. However, the molecular basis of the connections between the blastocyst and endometrium is not yet fully understood. Amphiregulin is a member of the epidermal growth factor family and is known to be expressed in the luminal epithelium of the mouse uterus on 3.5 days post coitum (dpc). Thus, to clarify the mechanism of amphiregulin at fetomaternal interface, we analyzed the expression pattern of amphiregulin mRNA in the oviducts and uteri of pregnant and psuedopregnant mice by means of real-time PCR. Amphiregulin expression in the pregnant uterus dramatically increased on 2.5 dpc,...

Freezing goat embryos at different developmental stages and quality using ethylene glycol and a slow cooling rate Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fonseca,J.F.; Batista,R.I.T.P.; Souza-Fabjan,J.M.G.; Oliveira,M.E.F.; Brandão,F.Z.; Viana,J.H.M..
ABSTRACT The efficiency of an alternative freezing protocol for goat embryos of different morphology and quality was tested. Fifty-eight embryos on Day 6-7 stage were transferred as fresh or after freeze-thawing (n=29/group). For freezing, embryos were placed into 1.5M ethylene-glycol solution for 10min. During this time, they were loaded in the central part of 0.25mL straw, separated by air bubble from columns containing PBS/BSA 0.4% plus 20% BFS. Straws were then frozen using a freezing machine from 20ºC to -6ºC at a cooling rate of 3ºC/min, stabilization for 15min (seeding after 5min), from -6 C to -32ºC at 0.6 C/min,and plunged into liquid nitrogen. Frozen embryos were thawed for 30s at 37ºC in a water bath. Embryos subjected to fresh transfer were...

Progesterone production in superovulated holstein heifers and in crossbred recipient of embryo supplemented with betacarotene and tocopherol Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Sales,José Nélio de Sousa; Dias,Lilian Mara Kirsch; Franci,Celso Rodrigues; Rocha,Alexandro Aluísio; Cardoso,Guilherme Gastão; Souza,José Camisão de.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of the intramuscular injection of betacarotene associated to tocopherol on the plasma concentration progesterone of superovulated Holstein heifers (experiment 1) and in crossbred (Bos taurus x Bos indicus) heifers submitted to fixed-time embryo transfer (FTET, experiment 2). In experiment 1, after estrus synchronization and superovulation animals were inseminated 12 and 24 hours after estrus onset and embryos flushed 7 days later. Heifers were allocated randomly to one of three treatments: Control; T800 (800 mg of betacarotene plus 500 mg of tocopherol) and T1200 (1,200 mg of betacarotene plus 750 mg of tocopherol). The treatments were given on the day of ear implant placement and repeated on the first...

Reproductive bio-technology for the guide dog for the blind OAK
鈴木, 宏志.
Although guide dogs make a remarkable contribution to the quality of life of the blind people, many countries suffer from an acute shortage of guide dogs such that not all those who need them are able to be supplied. One of the important challenges from the point of view of animal and veterinary science as well as social welfare is to establish a stable and effective breeding and reproduction system for guide dogs for the blind. Although the development and extension of assisted reproductive techniques such as artificial insemination, embryo transfer and in vitro fertilization has been remarkable, in canines, it is not a successful as other mammalian spices such as mice, pigs, cows and humans. In this review, recent advances of cryopreservation of sperm,...

Use of long-acting progesterone to acyclic embryo recipient mares R. Bras. Zootec.
Greco,Gabriel Maksoud; Burlamaqui,Fábio Luis Gonçalves; Pinna,Aline Emerim; Queiroz,Fernando José Rohen de; Cunha,Maria Pia dos Santos; Brandão,Felipe Zandonadi.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of cyclic and acyclic progesterone-treated recipient mares in a commercial embryo transfer program. Acyclic recipients were treated with decreasing amounts of estradiol cypionate (ECP® - Pfizer Saúde Animal, São Paulo, Brazil), followed by 1500 mg of a sustained-release progesterone injection (P4LA150® - Laboratórios B.E.T., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Out of all 1506 embryo recovery attempts performed, 59.36% were positive (894/1506). Pregnancy rates of cyclic and acyclic mares were, respectively, 44.12% (319/723) and 57.68% (139/241) - higher in acyclic recipients under progesterone treatment. Embryo loss was similar between groups (9.72% 31/319 vs. 11.51% - 16/139). When fertility data on acyclic...
